Couples & Marriage Intensives

Contact Us Now

Sometimes, weekly therapy just isn’t enough.

If you and your partner feel stuck in the same patterns, overwhelmed by disconnection, or facing a crisis that needs immediate attention, a couples intensive offers a powerful alternative. Instead of spreading the work out over months, intensives create focused, meaningful progress in just a few days.

What is a Couples Intensive?

A couples intensive is an extended, structured therapy experience—typically held over one or several days—designed to help you and your partner dive deeply into your relationship without the interruptions of everyday life. This format allows us to slow down, fully understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and begin creating real, lasting change.

A Collaborative, Integrative Approach

Each intensive is tailored to your unique relationship using a blend of evidence-based and experiential methods:

  • Gottman Method to help you understand relationship dynamics, communication patterns, and practical tools for rebuilding trust and connection
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to identify and shift the deeper emotional cycles that keep you stuck
  • Experiential techniques to move beyond talking and into real-time emotional engagement, helping you create new, meaningful experiences with one another

This collaborative approach allows us to balance structure with depth—giving you both practical strategies and emotional breakthroughs.

Why Choose an Intensive?

  • Accelerated progress: Rather than revisiting the same issues week after week, we work through core patterns in a concentrated way, helping you experience breakthroughs faster
  • Deeper understanding: With more time together, we can identify the root causes of conflict—not just manage symptoms
  • Less disruption to your life: Instead of months (or even years) of weekly sessions, many couples find that a few focused days can create significant momentum and clarity
  • Intentional investment: You’re setting aside dedicated time to prioritize your relationship—something many couples never get the chance to do

Are Intensives Effective?

Research on longer-format couples therapy models shows that extended sessions can be highly effective in creating meaningful change. Approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method are strongly supported by research, and when delivered in a concentrated format, couples often experience deeper emotional engagement and faster shifts in their relationship dynamics.

A Different Kind of Investment

An intensive is an investment—not just financially, but emotionally and relationally. By committing to a few focused days, you may avoid the emotional and financial cost of letting issues linger for months or years. Many couples find that this format helps them move forward more efficiently, with greater clarity and confidence.

How Long is each intensive day?

Each intensive day includes approximately 7 hours, which includes 6 hours of therapy with a lunch break.

Couples & Marriage Intensives - FAQs

Please reach us at hollypowellmft@oakleafcounseling.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Couples intensives may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel stuck in repeating patterns or unresolved conflict
  • Are experiencing disconnection, distance, or communication breakdowns
  • Want to strengthen an already solid relationship
  • Are navigating a crisis (such as infidelity or major life transitions)
  • Prefer a focused, efficient approach rather than long-term weekly therapy
  • Are motivated and willing to actively engage in the process

Intensives may not be appropriate if:

  • There is ongoing domestic violence or a lack of physical/emotional safety
  • One partner is unwilling or not ready to participate in the process
  • There are active, unmanaged substance abuse concerns that interfere with participation
  • One or both partners are already firmly decided on ending the relationship and not seeking clarity or repair

If you’re unsure whether an intensive is the right fit, we can help you determine the best next step.

Each intensive is tailored to your relationship, but generally includes:

  • Identifying patterns and cycles that keep you stuck
  • Exploring underlying emotions and needs
  • Learning practical communication and connection tools
  • Practicing new ways of interacting in real time
  • Creating a plan for continued growth after the intensive
